I've moved my blog onto a shiny new server and have transferred over quite a few of the posts from my old wordpress site. What should I do with my old site? I'm going to hide all of the posts on the blog as I believe holding them in two places can play havoc with search terms on google?
Basically, what should I be doing now I have a new site, as obviously google hasn't picked up on my new site as yet... advice would be much appreciated.
(Sorry for those of you who have already read this plea on Google+!)

I work in SEO and yes, 301 redirect is definitely the way to go.
If you duplicate the content on both domains, Google will most likely count that against the new site as it is a less powerful domain at this point and the content was first produced on the wordpress.com site.
Removing the content from the old site will take care of this to an extent, but adding the 301 redirect will also have the effect of passing on some of the domain power from old to new so you don't lose all of the benefit of external links into the old site from Google's point of view. This then helps build up the new site more quickly.

Thanks Ian/2ndYellow for your advice and info.
I've set up a 301 redirect at the cost of £7.76 (12 dollars) per year. Seems fair enough I finally hand over some money to wordpress after so many years of 'free' service..

hi ian. im currently moving a blogger.com blog from to a self hosted wordpress blog. Just like you did with 200%. because is not a wordpress.com site the 301 redirect you can buy wont work.
you mentioned : "When I migrated from Blogger to a self-hosted site, it was just a matter of entering some code"
Do you have any links to how you did it? ive found a couple of sites showing how to do it but would like to see if your method is easier/quicker.
cheers
