As many of you will be aware, I have spent the last couple of months investigating the possibility of starting an internet radio station. I've had some great feedback and advice from many of you, so thanks for that. I thought I'd widen the scope of the conversation a little bit by bringing it up on here.
As grand as this sounds it'd be a totally amateur, part-time operation. Essentially during normal operations it would play the latest independent football podcasts, and then at times run live shows (Cup Draws, Transfer Deadline Day, Big match evenings - or particular events etc. etc.). Most probably it'd launch just before Euro 2012 or at the start of next season. No need to rush things.
I think the main idea behind this is to have fun. Let's be honest, this isn't going to make anyone rich and the number of listeners are likely to hover very close to the zero mark. However, I think the live shows could be something genuinely interesting if promoted properly.
So, for the past month I have been running a station using Centova Cast (This document will give you an idea of what its features are: www.centova.com/docs/cast/CentovaCast%20-%20User's%20Guide.pdf) Essentially it allows me to upload mp3s to a server and to schedule them for certain times of the day. You can interrupt this stream of podcasts by connecting up Winamp and a plugin to broadcast live from your PC - via Icecast - with a few settings amended you should be able to broadcast a Skype conversation, though I haven't 100% confirmed that.
With the demands on my time (I work full-time believe it or not). I am more than happy to schedule podcasts, look after google+, twitter, facebook accounts and all that jazz but it's up to anyone who fancies it to do live shows.
I've had positive reactions from the dozen or so podcasters who I've e-mailed this idea too. I've had some great feedback and fully understand the limitations and problems that this sort of station would have. The general idea is to create something that's collaborative, fun and interesting.
Does anyone have any thoughts, good or bad?
