I've used Wordpress for nigh-on ten years now and swear by it as a content management platform for bloggers. I'm happy to help if anyone needs any advice with the system. In the most part, it's pretty easy to set up and run, particularly if you go for their hosted blogs from www.wordpress.com. However, you might want a bit more flexibility with your site. In that case there's a self-hosted version for use on your own server/hosting package, downloadable from www.wordpress.org. For those looking to run the more flexible self-hosted version, but need a starting point for when they want to tweak the layout and appearance of their theme, check out this handy link below, which breaks down a Wordpress page into its component parts. mashable.com/2011/01/11/how-wordpress-themes-actually-work-infographic/Hope this helps.

I'd not seen the Mashable link - a quick scan of it proves it could be very hand indeed. Cheers for the tip off on that.

It is. And if you're getting a blog off the ground and want to find a good, free theme for it, you'd do a lot worse than checking out Smashing Magazine's website, which features literally hundreds of Wordpress themes. www.smashingmagazine.com

I've been considering moving my wordpress blog over to self-hosting for quite some time now as the default themes are OK... but they're not brilliant are they?
However, when I get down to the actual dirty of moving over, I decide it'd be more enjoyable to whack out another blog post instead!

Simon, thanks very much for posting the link to Smashing Magazine. I have to say that, having finally (after a couple of years of chopping and changing) settled on a design, I had not been looking too much over the last few months and they are coming on in leaps and bounds. Some of those free themes are just outstanding and, because they are mostly so clean, would be very easy to adapt.
(This, by the way, is exactly the sort of thing that I was hoping for when I started this up)

No probs. I've been faffing about with Wordpress for years, so hopefully I can help out with a few bits and pieces.
The best thing about Wordpress over something simpler like Blogger is its scalability. Themes, plugins etc mean you can turn a very easy-to-use blogging platform into a full-blown website without too much hassle.

It should, of course, go without saying that adding random free themes from Google searching is not the wisest idea. The last free theme that used is the one that Mirko uses now, which is on the Smashing Magazine Top 100 list.
